Last year on the waters of Lake Bled at the World Rowing Championships the quest to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games began.

The Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland today named 18 boats for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Late afternoon finals on the Rotsee regatta course had 10 Olympic events race. For most of these races the top two would qualify but for two events, the women’s quadruple sculls and the men’s eight, just one boat would make it to the Olympics.
In cool and calm conditions the reason for calling this qualification regatta, the ‘regatta of death’ was clearly felt. Some crews rowed away from the finish line with shattered dreams, other crews celebrated like they had just won an Olympic medal.

Semifinals at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland came down to heartbreakingly close finishes and 100 per cent effort. Today rowers had to finish in the top three of their semifinal if they wanted to earn a position in the final and thus remain in contention for the 2012 Olympic Games. All other crews would be, in official speak, eliminated.

Both New Zealand crews (Lightweight men's 4- and M8+) aiming to qualify at this week's Last Chance Qualifying regatta in Lucerne face uphill battles after failing to impress in their first races. There is just one Olympic qualifying position available in the men’s eight and the USA have been firmly focussed on not breaking with the tradition of having a men's eight at the Olympics.

The IOC has allocated four single sculls into the Olympic regatta. Women scullers from Paraguay and Myanmar, and men single scullers from Niger and Monaco will race in the single sculls in London following the decision of the IOC’s Tripartite Commission.
